In this chapter, the author introduces synergy. This is the essence of principle centered leadership. It is the management tool to organize all great people with special skills. The leader usually has to leave the comfort zone and write up the road map for the followers. A successful leader can respect the others, create motivation and to compensate for weaknesses. This would sum up the technique of habit 4 win win and habit 5 understand. 

In this summer, a big hit movie “The Avengers 2012” is released. 7 great marvel heroes are fighting against a supervillian Loki. 7 great heroes are Iron Man, Thor, Captain American, Black Widow, Nick Fury, Hulk and Hawkeye. They team up as avengers. It is designed by the director of SHIELD. In the beginning of the movie, 7 of them do not know each other. They all have special talent. However, lacking in communication which can brings out misunderstanding. 

They are all suspecting each other. As a result, Loki can find out this weakness and using Hawkeye as a spy to fight against them one by one. Captain American has a leadership skill, he can empower the team members and compensate the weakness. Separate their skill and in suitable position and respect each other. Respect is the first step to know each other basic theory.

In a large organization, once a new mission is released, a project leader should arrive to each department and explain in detail. Usually, different department will be engine, IT, shipping, account, legal and marketing. In order to understand each other, a brainstorm meeting is very important. It can raise out questions and concerns from each department. The project leader should carry out habit 4 and 5, compromise each department and respect each other. Then they can trust each other and can co-operate each other. The writer indicates that synergy means that 1+1 may equal 8,16 or even 1,600.

In this chapter, the author introduces the way to proceed public victory. This is the way to communicate with your family members and colleagues. Building up a good relationship can help you to step forward into public victory. Imagine there is an emotional bank account between you and your surrounding friends and family members. If you deposit the courtesy, kindness and honesty, you are increasing your personal integrity level. If you deposit the discourtesy, disrespect and overreacting, your personal trust level will be very low. Thus you are deteriorating your marriage, business and your life. 

 

I share the movie story of “The Descendants”. This is an American movie about a family guy who based in Hawaii. Matt King ( George Clooney ) has a family with 2 daughters 10 years old Scottie and 17 years old Alex. Matt King is not very close to his daughters and he is acting as the “back up parent”. Until one day, his wife Elizabeth in a coma after the boat accident. He is forced to confront Scottie’s inappropriate behavior and Alex’s destructive behaviors. 

In the mean time, he finds out Elizabeth will not recover and she was having an affair. Matt confronts the disconnection of his wife and he is trying to figure a way to repair the relationship with his family members. The author indicates 6 major deposits to build up the emotional bank account.

Understanding the individual

If you want to enter the industry, company or your kid’s life, you really need to fully understand the individual. You really need to spend time to be with these persons in order to fully understand the individuals in the industry, company and family. 

Attending to the little things

Once you can understand a person, you need to observe the personality in deep towards a tiny matter. Building up an emotional bank is a long term relationship. Thus you need to show your love, kindnesses, courtesies within a tiny matter. 

Keeping commitments

Building trust and integrity will drive from keeping a commitment. No matter to your senior staff, clients or family members. Once you cannot commit your promise, the others won’t build their hopes around your next promises. 

Clarifying expectations

Before you make a commitment, you need to clarify the expectations. Different individuals will help different expectations. Before, you invest your time and effort; you need to have a clear expectation from different individuals. 

 

Showing personal integrity

Nobody would like to enter a field with a group of people whom are sweet talk to your face and bad mouth your back. Integrity is keeping a promise to form a trust bridge among the group. If you showing your 2 faces ability. Sooner or later, you will break your integrity level in your friends, family members and colleagues.  

Apologizing sincerely when you make a withdrawal

Once you make a mistake, if you can make a sincere apology immediately, you will repair your mistake.

In this chapter, the author indicates that the second effective people habit is a clear mission statement. A clear mission statement can be presented as the education, friends, family, career etc. This habit is based on principles of personal leadership. Imagine a leader of boy scouts. This person should fully understand the final destination. The leader should have the ability of linking up the starting point to the final destination. All the steps can be developed and workable. This kind of people will always make sure they are in the right position and direction. They can continue to receive victories. Usually, people are failing of their mission without a clear mission statement. 

The author emphasizes the difference of leadership and management. Leadership deals with the top line: What are things I want to accomplish? Leadership is doing the right things. Management is doing things right. Leadership determines whether the ladder is leaning against the right wall. Management is efficiency in climbing the ladder of success. 

 

George Lucas is an American film producer, screen writer, director and entrepreneur. The well known movie series is Star Wars. He is the founder of Lucas Film Limited and Lucas Arts Entertainment Company. When he found out that his talent was making movies. He rejected his father’s stationery business and studied art and filming production in the college. 

In his documentary of the Mythology of Star Wars, he points out that the young people should find a job which can follow your talent. He encourage young people to find a job which you love the process rather that the salary. Young people love to imagine, think positive and live with passion. When he was young, he had lots of rough ideas about space and living creatures. He collected all the rough ideas and tried to conduct himself to become an editor and cameraman. All his great movies in the beginning are coming from imagination. He lectures the young people should find a way to conduct themselves to a successful path. Try to do something to make contribution to the society. 

 

Anakin Skywalker is the character of Star Wars saga. George Lucas creates this character as the Jedi and finally he turns himself to a sith. In the first episode The Phantom Menace. Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn meets him when Anakin is a nine years old boy. Qui-Gon thinks this boy is the “Chosen One” whom can bring balance to the Force. Then he is named as Darth Vader and fights against his son Luke Skywalker. In the final battle, he sacrifices himself to save his son and kills the Sith Lord. In the beginning of the Star Wars, George Lucas designs this character as the “Chosen One”. Even he turns himself to the dark side, he is still the “Chosen One” whom can bring balance of the Force. The first 3 episodes are showing how a victim becomes an evil guy. Star Wars Episode 1 is showing in 1999. The final chapter of episode 3 The Revenge of the Sith is showing in 2005. The first 3 episodes can link up with the other 3 episodes.  

In this Chapter, the author introduces the second habit for most effective people. You should begin with the end in mind to develop a personal mission statement. This mission statement which can focus on what you want to be and to do and on the values upon which begin and doing are based.

The 7 habits of highly effective people Part 1 (An Overview) –The King’s speech

In this chapter, the author would like to introduce the way to raise a good habit. He defines that an individual character is a composite of habits. Habits are powerful factor in our lives. Plus if you use it effectively, you can establish effectiveness in our lives. The author defines a habit as the intersection of knowledge, skill and desire. In a living process, all the man kind needs to survive and adapts the environment. We need to break through to new levels and move to a higher position. 7 habits are the natural laws of growth from dependence to independence to interdependence. Sometimes, it is a painful process but the process produces happiness. Tomorrow builds today, you can gain happiness if you can build better futures.

 

In this chapter, I pick up a movie of “The King’s Speech”. It is a 2010 British historical drama film. This movie introduces Prince Albert, Duke of York how to overcome his personal difficult of stammer. He tried so many methods to cure his voice which were not successful. Until one day, he met an Australian speech therapist Lionel Logue. Lionel Logue provided several lessons to cure him and became friends. His brother King Edward VIII would like to marry a divorced American women and abdicated the throne. Prince Albert became King George VI and carried out a radio broadcast on Britain’s declaration of war on Germany in 1939. 

The author indicates that effective habit is the maturity continuum. All the successful leader has to go through dependence stage, independence stage and interdependence stage. King George VI went through those stages. In dependence stage, Prince Albert refused to carry any speech in the public. In independence stage, Prince Albert took several speech lessons to cure his stammer. Interdependence people can combine their own efforts with the efforts of others to achieve their great success. In the end of the movie, King George VI carried out a sensational radio broadcast and lifted up all the British soldiers to fight against Germany.

 

The author defines the principle of effectiveness. Effectiveness lies in the balance of P/PC. P stands for production of desired results, and PC stands for production capability, the ability or asset that produces a great result. Usually, the bosses focus on P ( the result ), they forget the PC ( production capability ). Human asset is also a big investment in the company. The author introduces that the PC principle is to always treat your employees exactly as you want them to treat your best customers. Prince Albert, Duke of York tried several treatments in the early stage such as speaking with marble in his mouth. He didn’t get improvement at all. But he didn’t give up and he searched for a professional speech therapist. Misunderstanding and arguments were generated in the early speech lessons. Prince Albert released his honor and treated Lionel Logue as a friend. Finally, he overcame his stammer and built up his self esteem.

This book is specified for the person who is not successful, not talent, lacking in confidence or would like to change his / her own life towards a successfully career path. The author Stephen R. Covey indicates 7 habits from highly effective people, these habits which can help you to become a successful leader in your school life, business, career, family, friendship and marriage. In this chapter inside out, the author reports that those people who wish to become successful, they need to start to develop their thinking and behavior. This is the process of well developing personality ethic. Personality ethic is the way of thinking and problem solving. Usually, people would like to follow their parents’ footsteps, school life, friendship and history memory. However, once they reach an obstacle and they cannot solve by their own methods. Smart people would like to observe the problem in different angles in order to live and keep moving forward. Once they overcome the problem, they can receive victory and experience. Plus they develop principles which can conduct their career path towards winning and continuously to gain self esteem towards public. 

In the chapter, I pick up 127 hours this movie to demonstrate how to observe the fact in different angles. This movie is based on Ralston’s autobiography “Between a Rock and a Hard Place”. James Franco stars as Aron Ralston and he goes to Canyonlands National Park alone on 25^thApril 2003 alone. He leaved the door without telling anybody and message where he would be. Accidentally, his arm was trapped against the canyon wall for 127 hours. His mind came up 4 options, the first one was waiting for help but nobody knew that he was trapped in the middle of the Canyon wall. The second one was trying to move the rock but he was not capable with his own equipment. The third one was to amputate his own arm, but his knife was not sharp enough to cut his arm and he could not survive with the blood lost for 4 hours to reach his vehicle. The forth one was waiting for death.  

 On day 6, he realized the first 2 options were not possible. He would like to live to continue his life, to join his sister’s wedding, to meet his future wife and his children. He took the option 3 and he torn his fresh with his pocket knife and broke his bones. This painful process lasted for 1 hour and he finally leaved the Canyon and survived.

The concept of this chapter, inside out means to start first with self, even more fundamentally, to start with the most inside part of self with your paradigms, your character, and your motives. If you want the secondary greatness of recognized talent, focus first on primary greatness of character. In order live in a better live, you need to develop a bright thinking mind to solve problem. You need to observe everything in plenty point of views. Once you generate a list of options, you can choose the workable and achievable solutions to let you overcome a hostile situation. Inside – out is a process, a continuing process of renewal based on the natural laws that govern human growth and progress. The aim is to develop a new level of thinking in different period and situation inside your memory and behavior. Before your ways of actions will become a habit. You need to think inside out rather than outside in. For instance, you can copy a mentor such as Steve Jobs, JK Rowling etc. However, this action is reaching a leaf of the tree plant. If you want to become another Steve Jobs or JK Rowling, you need to reach the root of the tree. Thus you need to develop a better level of thinking. The new principle will be your past history or your suggestions from your friends. You need to look things in different angles. 

 

 

I watch the movie of 127 hours starring with James Franco. I would like to learn in depth for this story. Then I search the video clips from YouTube. A full documentary was presented by the first character Aron Ralston. After I watch this documentary, I understand deeply about the real situation and the circustance of the accident. Several ways to understand in depth of this event and person. I can read the topics from google news, wiki, novel, movie, youtube clips etc. If you think you finish this movie and you can fully understand the story, you reach only the leaf of the tree. Plus you don’t build up a new concept of survive. Look different and seek for any possiblities is the way to develop good habit. It is the way to shift your paradigm to a better personality ethic.
